"What size dumpster do I need?" is the first question almost every customer asks us, and it is the right one to start with. Go too small and you are paying for a second haul. Go too big and you are paying for space you never fill. This simple guide walks through the four roll-off sizes we carry at Sunnyside Roll-Offs and the projects each one handles best.
What Size Dumpster Do I Need for My Project?
Roll-off containers are measured in cubic yards, which is the volume of debris they hold. The bigger the number, the more the container can carry. Start with the type of project, then think about how bulky and how heavy your debris will be.
12-Yard: Small Cleanouts and Yard Debris
Our smallest container is a great fit for garage cleanouts, basement decluttering, small renovations, and yard debris. Its lower walls make it easy to load by hand, and it tucks into most residential driveways.
20-Yard: Remodels and Roofing
The 20-yard is our most versatile size. It handles medium remodels such as kitchens and bathrooms, roofing tear-offs, deck removals, and larger garage cleanouts. If your project sits between small and large, this is usually where to start.
30-Yard: Major Renovations and New Construction
When you are gutting multiple rooms, building new, or clearing out an entire property, the 30-yard gives you the extra capacity to keep the job moving without stopping for a swap.
40-Yard: Commercial Builds and Demolition
Our largest container is built for commercial construction, major demolition, industrial cleanouts, and large events. It has the tallest walls, so plan on loading with equipment or through the rear door.
You can find the full details for every container on our roll-off dumpster sizes page.
3 Things That Change the Answer
- Debris type: Bulky, light items like furniture and drywall fill space fast. Dense materials like shingles, dirt, and concrete get heavy long before the container looks full.
- Available space: Make sure the container fits where you plan to put it, with room for the truck to deliver and pick up.
- Project length: Rentals run 3, 5, or 7 days. A longer project may be better served by a larger container than by multiple swaps.
Sorting and reusing materials where you can also cuts down on how much space you need. The EPA's guide to construction and demolition materials is a helpful resource on what can be recovered.
When in Doubt, Size Up or Just Ask
If you are stuck between two sizes, the larger one is usually the safer choice, since overfilling is not allowed and debris has to stay below the top rail. Better yet, tell us about your project and we will recommend a size. Our frequently asked questions page covers more on rental periods and what can go in the container.
