Roofing Dumpster Rental: 5 Essential Tips for an Easy Job

A roofing dumpster rental is one of the first things to line up when a roof is coming off. Colorado hail keeps roofers busy along the Front Range, and old shingles, underlayment, flashing, and nails pile up fast once the tear-off starts. Whether you are a roofing contractor or a homeowner managing your own replacement, these five tips will keep the job site clean and the project on schedule.

Why a Roofing Dumpster Rental Makes Tear-Offs Easier

Roofing debris is heavy, sharp, and messy. Tossing it straight from the roof into a container keeps it off the lawn and driveway, cuts cleanup time, and reduces the chance of stray nails ending up in a tire. One container, one haul, and the debris is gone.

5 Tips for Your Roof Replacement

1. Size for Weight, Not Just Volume

Shingles are dense. A single layer of asphalt shingles can weigh a few hundred pounds per roofing square, which is 100 square feet, and a second layer doubles it. Our 20-yard container is the size we recommend most often for roofing, but tell us the square footage and number of layers so we can confirm. You can compare containers on our dumpster sizes and services page.

2. Schedule Delivery Before Tear-Off Day

Have the container on site before the crew arrives so no one is waiting. We typically offer next-day delivery with a 24-hour turnaround, and rentals run 3, 5, or 7 days, which gives you a cushion if weather pushes the schedule.

3. Place It Close to the Roofline

The closer the container sits to the edge of the roof, the less debris gets carried by hand. A flat driveway spot beside the house is ideal. Leave room for the truck to back in and check for low wires or branches overhead.

4. Protect the Driveway and Yard

Lay plywood or boards down where the container will sit if you are concerned about the surface, and use tarps around the house to catch debris and nails that miss. A magnetic sweeper at the end of the day picks up what the tarps do not.

5. Keep Prohibited Items Out

Shingles, felt, wood decking, and flashing are fine. Hazardous materials, paint, chemicals, asbestos, batteries, tires, and propane tanks are not. If an older roof may contain asbestos materials, stop and have it evaluated before anything goes in the container. See our dumpster rental FAQ for the full list.
